Most financial advice tells you to dump your extra cash into index funds or save up a massive down payment for a rental property. Nobody ever tells you to go buy an enclosed box trailer.

A little while ago, I spent $2,800 on a standard 8-foot cargo trailer to see if the peer-to-peer rental market was actually real. I honestly thought it might just sit in the driveway taking up space.

I finally sat down and pulled the transaction history from the last 36 months. It brought in $6,406.57 in total revenue. After subtracting the $2,800 purchase price, I cleared $3,606.57 in pure profit. It completely paid itself off during year one, and I still have the asset to sell whenever I want.

The reason it works so well comes down to how low-stakes it is. It’s a box on wheels. There’s no engine to blow up, no oil to change, and no moving mechanical parts. I just check the tire pressure and taillights between bookings and occasionally grease the bearings. Because it’s fully enclosed, it’s also weather-proof, which makes it a magnet for people moving household goods or expensive equipment. Our best months cleared over $600, and it consistently maintained a steady baseline of $150 to $450 a month.

If you told a standard investor that you found a hands-off asset that returns over double its purchase price in three years while keeping its equity, they’d look for the catch. Turns out the catch is just owning a boring piece of equipment people need to haul their stuff.
